We are pleased to announce the launch of our latest CIBSE approved CPD to help commercial heating professionals understand the key safety considerations associated with R290 air source heat pumps.
‘Safety considerations for R290 commercial air source heat pumps: Understanding the practical application of flammable refrigerants in commercial heating’ is designed for consultants, designers, specifiers, contractors and engineers working with commercial heat pump systems.
As the heating industry moves towards lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, R290 is becoming an increasingly important option. Also known as propane, R290 is a natural refrigerant with a GWP of just three and an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero. It also offers strong efficiency and is capable of supporting the higher flow temperatures often required in commercial heating applications.
However, R290 is classified as an A3 refrigerant, meaning it has low toxicity but high flammability. This gives it a different risk profile from many refrigerants traditionally used in commercial heating and means that safety needs to be considered throughout specification, design, installation and maintenance.
What does the new R290 CPD cover?
The new CPD has been developed to give attendees greater confidence when working with commercial R290 heat pumps, while explaining not only what the relevant safety requirements are, but why they exist and how they apply in practice.
Topics covered include:
- refrigerant classifications and the properties of R290
- UK regulations and technical standards, including DSEAR
- working safely with hydrocarbon refrigerants
- risk assessment principles
- exclusion and safety zones
- installation location and clearances
- leak detection and hydraulic circuit safety
- ongoing maintenance requirements.
A particular focus is placed on exclusion and safety zones around R290 heat pumps. The CPD explains how factors such as refrigerant charge, potential leak scenarios, ventilation and installation geometry all influence the size and shape of these areas. Practical installation examples are also used to demonstrate how the principles apply to common commercial applications.
Why is R290 heat pump safety important?
R290 is denser than air, so if a leak occurs the refrigerant can accumulate in low-lying areas such as drains, pits and manholes. Potential ignition sources, building openings and ventilation intakes therefore all need to be considered when selecting an installation location.
The CPD also looks at how these safety considerations continue throughout the life of a heat pump system, including maintenance.
Why should I take this CPD seminar?
By the end of the seminar, attendees should have a clearer understanding of refrigerant safety classifications, the key UK regulatory requirements, how to assess risks associated with R290 and how to apply appropriate installation and maintenance practices.
How can I book the R290 heat pump safety CPD?
This latest seminar forms part of our comprehensive CPD programme, designed to help commercial heating professionals keep their knowledge of evolving technologies, regulations and best practice up to date.
Our experienced specification team can deliver the CPD online or in person nationwide. To find out more about our CPD programme or to book a seminar, click here: Book a CPD Seminar
