In response to the growing use of natural refrigerants across the commercial heating sector, we have launched a new technical ‘Lunch & Learn’ presentation focused on the safety considerations surrounding commercial air source heat pumps using R290 (Propane) refrigerant.
Our new session, titled Safety considerations for the ECOMOD 290HT commercial air source heat pump featuring R290 refrigerant, has been developed to support consultants, contractors, installers and facilities professionals who are increasingly encountering R290 technology within live projects.
As the industry transitions towards lower-carbon heating solutions, R290 is gaining attention due to its strong performance and ultra-low global warming potential and its ability for up to 75°C flow temperature. However, we recognise that its classification as a flammable refrigerant means that confidence around safe design, specification and installation is essential. This Lunch & Learn has therefore been designed to help close knowledge gaps and provide clear, accessible guidance for those working with or considering R290 systems.
During the session, we explore practical topics that are directly relevant to both design-stage and on-site decision-making. These include safe working practices when handling hydrocarbons, understanding different refrigerant types, and the key safety considerations that apply when working with R290 systems. We also cover the safe transportation of R290 heat pumps, including the importance of correct labelling, documentation and trained handling.
A significant focus is placed on exclusion and safety zones. We explain how refrigerant behaviour, ventilation and surrounding features such as drains, openings and building structures can affect risk. We also guide attendees through important installation considerations, including suitable locations and clearances for different applications such as ground-mounted units, rooftop installations and cascade arrangements.
Our Lunch & Learn sessions are delivered by our experienced specification team and can be hosted either online or in person. They are designed to fit conveniently into the working day, typically lasting around 30-45 minutes, and can be tailored to suit the needs of each audience, whether the focus is on early-stage design understanding, practical site application, or broader awareness of how R290 technologies are evolving within commercial heating.
While we continue to offer a range of CIBSE-approved CPDs, this session is intentionally delivered as a short Lunch & Learn and not CIBSE-accredited, allowing us to make it more practical, flexible and discussion-led around real project and site considerations. Our intention is to support better-informed decision-making across the industry, helping more professionals engage confidently with emerging technologies while keeping safety, compliance and good practice firmly in focus.
